Breast Lift Surgery Information

In what cases may a breast lift be necessary?

The simplest answer to when a breast lift is indicated is: when the skin has stretched too much to achieve breast elevation with implants alone. In such cases, we perform the correction with a breast lift. It can also be performed in combination with breast augmentation.

Possible causes of breast sagging

Regardless of how elastic the connective tissue is in the breast, there can be several other reasons for it to sag. Weight loss, whether minor or major, plays a role as a visible physical change. Pregnancy and breastfeeding are additional factors, which are also causes of sagging breasts. The changes that occur over several months, but relatively quickly and suddenly, affect the bra size as well as the shape and firmness of the breast, especially after breastfeeding.

At the same time, genetic predispositions and age can also be reasons why it is necessary to lift sagging breasts and position them in the right place. It can also be part of a combined treatment, for example, if the skin has stretched too much and the insertion of an implant cannot provide sufficient lift. Or when the surgery is performed in conjunction with a breast reduction or nipple correction.

With age, the female breast loses its firmness and sags, and the breasts become "droopy". On the one hand, the elasticity of the skin decreases, but significant changes can also occur after childbirth or even abortion. During pregnancy, the glandular tissue of the breast swells under the influence of hormones, preparing for milk production for the baby.

Breast Lift After Childbirth

After childbirth, this milk production usually begins. During breastfeeding, the breasts are often particularly large and swollen because they are filled with breast milk. This is why, after milk production has ceased, or after a surgical or spontaneous termination of pregnancy, the glandular tissue does not return to its original state, but decreases in size and atrophies.

Due to the flexibility of the stretched skin, it can compensate for this to a certain extent by contracting (just as it does with the abdomen, for example), but for those with less elasticity or greater atrophy, sagging is inevitable and can be corrected with breast lift surgery. The extent of this depends on the components mentioned above, as well as the original size of the breast.

The extent of sagging can also be significant after frequent weight loss and weight gain. Based on this, 4 main stages can be distinguished:

  1. The nipple is above the inframammary fold (where the lower curve of the breast meets the chest).
  2. The nipple (mamilla) is at the level of the inframammary fold.
  3. The nipple is below the inframammary fold.
  4. The nipple is pointing downwards.

So, during the change, the distance between the inframammary fold and the mamilla actually increases, and the mamilla moves lower and lower. During a breast lift, the mamilla needs to be moved higher and the aforementioned distance reduced.

Breast Lift Surgery Step-by-Step

The First Consultation

What do we mean by consultation? During the personal consultation before the procedures, there is an opportunity for the plastic surgeon and the patient to discuss the most important details together. The information discussed here highlights both the benefits of the surgery and the possible side effects. This allows the patient to hopefully make a decision in their own best interest without any doubts.

To achieve the best aesthetic result, breast implant placement is usually also necessary. Of course, it may be that this is not necessary due to individual circumstances, but it is recommended in about half of the cases. In this case, the doctor will explain the different techniques of breast plastic surgery, and then they will discuss which solution would be best in your case, and show you where the scars and areola will be located.

Once the patient has received all the information and decides on the surgery, we will schedule an appointment for the day of the surgery. We perform general medical examinations such as mammography, ultrasound under the age of 40, and ECG. This is not only necessary but mandatory above a certain age.

The Procedure of Breast Lift Surgery

In surgery performed under general anesthesia, the process begins with the incision. After the incision is made, the excess skin is removed, followed by the compression of the existing glandular tissue. If this does not ensure the desired result, which would be ideal for our patient, an implant of the appropriate size will be inserted if necessary, as previously discussed. Another important part of the plastic surgery is when the surgeon fixes the nipples in the correct anatomical position. Our patient will not feel much during the plastic surgery, as we will put them under anesthesia. The entire surgery takes about 2-3 hours and is relatively quick.

Scar Healing, Scar Treatment

Part of the healing process is that the scars gradually fade, and in optimal cases, they are barely visible after some time. It is very important to lead a gentle lifestyle during this period, at least for a few more weeks, more precisely for the first month. After this, you can gradually return to your previous lifestyle and sports. Visible scars heal in 6 months, and the healing time for internal scars is two years. So, complete healing takes two years.

(Most Common) Complications After Breast Lift

  • Bleeding
  • Inflammation
  • Nerve disturbance
  • Skin and tissue necrosis
  • Wound healing disorder

Types, Kinds, and Techniques of Breast Lift:

The three most commonly used types of breast lift surgery are:

  1. The skin is removed in a ring shape around the areola. This procedure results in the least scarring, but it can only be used rarely (in so-called tubular breasts, which have a small base and an elongated shape). This type of breast lift, if chosen inappropriately, can result in a flattened, poorly shaped breast.
  2. Excess skin is removed from around the areola and the area below it (in the shape of a mushroom), so that scars are located around the areola and vertically below it. The vertical scar may be slightly thicker than average in this type of surgery.
  3. In the traditional (inverted "T" shaped) incision, scars are created around the nipple, vertically, and horizontally in the crease under the breast. With the right choice, excellent results can be achieved with all three breast lift techniques.

After Breast Lift Surgery

The procedure is performed under general anesthesia, preceded by an anesthesiologist's examination. In uncomplicated cases, you can go home the day after the procedure, spending one night in the clinic. After the breast lift, the sutures are removed in the 2nd week, at the end of the week. For 4 weeks, you must wear a special compression bra day and night, and then for another two weeks after the fourth week, you must wear it during the day. Why is it necessary to wear it? It keeps the breasts in place after the surgery, promotes healing in the right place, so that the result of the procedure can develop as planned.
